A paver driveway will improve the curb appeal of your property while also increasing its value. However, as with every other home improvement project, there are many factors to consider, including the color and style of your driveway pavers, as well as the laying pattern and overall design. The aim, of course, is to create a lovely home entrance that is sturdy enough to bear the strain of vehicle usage without shifting or cracking.

DRIVEWAY PAVER STYLES

The first question is whether the driveway will be permeable or non-permeable. A paved driveway made of bricks or stone would be impervious, but there are several advantages to installing a permeable paver driveway. Water can never pool on the surface, and a heating system can be installed beneath the pavers to keep snow from piling up. Permeable driveway pavers may also receive tax incentives or grants in some jurisdictions because they reduce the strain on local stormwater collection systems while also removing pollutants to improve local water quality.

The second choice when designing your driveway paver project is whether to go with a traditional, modern, or stone-textured design. Each category comes in a variety of paver designs from Belgard. Porcelain pavers may be used to create an ultra-modern appearance, but they must be laid on a concrete foundation for vehicle weights to avoid cracking. Concrete pavers are also a good choice for a clean, modern look, and they come in many colors and styles. If you want the look of natural stone, but with the durability of concrete, take a look at manufactured stones.

DRIVEWAY PAVER LAYING PATTERN OPTIONS

The classic and most sturdy option is a herringbone design set at a 45-degree angle to the garage. This laying pattern has the greatest interlock for keeping the pavers in place, particularly in high-traffic regions.

Ashlar patterns, on the other hand, are making a comeback in popularity. They can be used to great effect for both residential and higher-traffic areas with a more modern appearance.

Standard residential driveways may be designed with a running bond or basketweave design, but they are not advised for heavier traffic zones such as business driveways or common areas in subdivisions.

It's best to avoid using permeable pavers with running bond or basketweave designs since the bigger joints offer a greater chance of moving when utilized with ashlar or herringbone patterns.

DRIVEWAY PAVER THICKNESS AND BASE

Driveways have traditionally used 80mm (3 inch) pavers with a 6′′ base. However, in recent years, it is becoming more frequent to use a lighter 60mm (2-3/8 inch) paver with a thicker foundation. In rainier areas, due to absorbent clays that can cause soils to shift when wet, a thicker paver and base is necessary to prevent the pavers from moving.

The use of a geotextile fabric between the foundation and the pavers is also becoming more common, as it helps to keep the base material in place and allows water to drain more easily.

In this type of site scenario, a thin base exposes pavers to separating or fracturing from soil changes. A layer of geo-fabric between the dirt and the aggregate layer may prevent shifting clays from causing separation or cracking in pavers, but a thicker basis is still advised. In arid regions, 60mm pavers can be effectively utilized with a thinner base.

30mm thin pavers can be installed over a sound residential concrete slab driveway without foundation cracks. In many situations, DriBondTM advanced mudset can be used to simplify the entire overlay. If there's a risk of shifting soils, you may simply DriBond the perimeter and sand-set the primary paver field. Keep in mind that an overlay will raise the existing slab by 2.5 to 3 inches, possibly affecting connections to the garage, house, street, or pathways.

PAVER COLOR AND BORDER OPTIONS

The roof and the driveway are both tan, which is a good match. The color tones of the roof work well with this Mega-Bergerac driveway because it incorporates similar colors. Only the massive stones of this 4-piece system were used to create a border.

Trends are moving in this direction: to use the same driveway pavers as the roof of the house, either in a primary paver field or as a border. Using the same paver in a different color or laying pattern, borders may be quickly constructed.

Another option is to use a contrasting paver shape, texture, color, and/or style for the border. You may also make two borders or work with your contractor to develop additional creative design ideas.

PAVER DRIVEWAY EMBELLISHMENTS

As for distinctive features to your paver driveway design, pattern embellishments can be used to create focal points. The driveway entrance, the apron of the garage, and a "carriage drop," or the location where someone would be dropped off next to the home's formal approach are examples of typical focal points.

A circle kit adds a traditional focal point to paver driveways, complementing the design. Squares and rectangles are two contemporary focal points that may be used to make designs. Circle kits can be utilized to create a fan or a fishtail pattern in order for a Romanesque appearance.
